There's nothing like an interview question that lights you up. A question that will inspire you. One to help you show who you really are and why you are best suited to the position.

The question that makes it all is 'What is your greatest accomplishment?' In this article, you will learn four simple steps to answer this popular interview question. You will also learn about a few sample answers that you can use and customize for your next interview. If we've never met before, I'm Heather Austin from ProfessorAustin.com and #TheCareerClub on Facebook.

Let's jump right in! Tip number one: choose a performance that is directly related to the position you are applying for.

The performance you share must match directly. Determine what qualities the company is looking for in their ideal candidate, then select an accomplishment to share that shows how your skills, expertise and talents are a perfect match. Tip number two: Pick an accomplishment that you are very proud of.

To really show off your personality and character in your interview, pick an accomplishment that excites you when you talk about it. This is going to be something to talk to someone about for hours. Don't confuse this question with the other popular interview question: 'What is your greatest strength?' The greatest strength question requires you to talk about a quality that you possess.

While the greatest achievement question requires you to talk about an accomplishment that you have achieved. Now I've made a article that explains exactly how to answer the biggest strength question. I will link this article below.

Tip number three: Pick an achievement that was recent. To show your relevance in the market, pick an achievement that wasn't too long ago. Something to share that has happened lately.

Now here's a bonus tip. If you are a student and you don't have much work experience, you can take advantage of the success of your educational achievements. Tip number four, use the star method when answering this question.

This question is now considered a behavioral question in the interview. So use the star approach to structure your answer. Now I have a separate article that goes into more detail on behavioral interview questions.

I'll link that below, but just to summarize the star method, the S stands for the situation and the T for the task. Here you describe the event related to your performance. One stands for action.

Describe the action steps you took to achieve the particular achievement, and R is for result. Explain the result you achieved with this achievement. So here's the thing, you want to keep your performance positive and professional.

You really want to distance yourself from talking about a challenge that you have overcome in your personal life. Let's jump to some sample answers. The first sample answer I'm going to share with you is an answer I would give if I were asked this question in an interview today. 'In my previous position as academic dean, I had the privilege of hiring hundreds of faculty members.

Under my leadership, my team has exceeded retention and program growth goals. As a result, I received the College President's Distinguished Colleague of the Year award. Only three people are selected out of thousands each year to receive this nomination. ' So we come to the second example answer. 'My greatest achievement was during my previous position as a business analyst.

I have developed an innovative business system that streamlines the company's approach to collecting documents and analyzing business needs. This enabled the company to quickly interpret the problems and needs of our customers and make timely decisions. ' To help you get everything right at your next interview, take a look at the Interview Guide Cheat Sheet.

Hey what's up, John Sonmez from simpleprogrammer.com. I got this question about the structure of a weekly report.

I talk about creating a weekly report in my book Soft Skills: A Software Developer's LifeManual. In this book, I have a couple of chapters where I talk about career issues and how to do really well in a corporate or regular job. One of the things I talk about, one of the techniques that I used a lot and that I use for almost every job when I found out, was this idea of doing a weekly report.

Basically, I got this question, how to structure the weekly report. I'll answer that right here. But I want to talk a little bit about this idea of a. speak weekly report.

This is something I kind of stumbled upon. If you have ever been a manager you know that one of the most important and difficult things to do in your job is getting people to tell you what they are doing or better Said to know what they are doing, to get communication, to look up your people and say, 'Hey, is this job done?' to know what the progress is. You are basically collecting information from all of these people.

A good manager does this by collecting all the information and relaying it, they summarize it and they check the progress, they make sure that things are okay, they keep all the pots on the stove for cooking. That's what a good manager does. The reason I'm saying this is because, as an employee, you can do to help your manager look good that you can give them this information.

Here's a quick tip for you that will help you a lot. It's something you should be doing; for any job, whether or not you are asked to, and something - if I got a new job that is the first thing I would do. In the first week I sent a so-called weekly report.

It's easy. All I did was do this. I followed what I was doing every day.

What have I done? Bullets of what I've done, what I've achieved, there has been great accomplishments and every kind of praise I've received, something like that, and just followed up on it. I basically keep track of my accomplishments and my job and what I do every day. At the end of the week I would send out a weekly report that is a summary of all the days I've done it and then a bit more information, like maybe a highlight of the week, what I'm going to do next week, and maybe if I have a question or have something that is blocking me.

I would send this to my supervisor without being asked. The other thing I would do is that the first week when I post this I explain this process and say, 'Look, this is what I am doing. I just want to let you know just to make sure you know what I'm doing, what I'm working on every day, so I'll send you this report every week if that's okay.

I also pointed this out to your manager just in case you are sick or you are out or something, so that this information can go to someone so they know what is going on, just in case you are unable are to get there and report no information when not there. If you don't mind, I just wrote to him as FYI. Just so that he has this information.

Nobody has ever complained about it. You loved it. It was a very popular one.

It's such a valuable thing. There are several reasons why this is valuable. One of the main reasons this is valuable is because like I said, you are helping your manager by giving him all the information he needs; you are one less person to manage.

You are basically like a free role for her. They'll love it because they don't have to look after you and find out what's going on. Communication is so important.

As someone who now leads a team, I can tell you that I love it when I have someone who works for me and communicates well. It's so great because I don't have to guess what's going on. I don't have to annoy them.

You give me that stuff. It’s so great. You will be valuable there.

Not only that, but often a manager will be leading a very large team. If you can be the person who always stands in front of you, every week they see what you repeat, they see what your accomplishments are, you will stand out and that is really, really important. Because it's really easy to do a lot of good work and when no one knows what you're repeating and how hard you're working, and all of those accomplishments that you have, it won't matter, especially when it comes to review time past.

This is another important point when the review time comes. This is kind of a CYA. I will tell you a short story.

I once worked for a company. I won't mention the name here, but they were doing stack sorting. If you don't know, with stack ranking there is basically a certain number of people they are going to give an S grade to and a certain number of an E, and they basically have to - they don't rate you Your performance, they'll sort you.

Only a certain number of people can get or be rated for the promotion or raise, some people have to be all the way down or just live up to expectations. Well, I was close to the low end of a review once and kicked the butt mean, I was definitely one of the most productive employees, but the problem was I had just been promoted. In order to do such things - political correctness - senior people who had not been promoted in a while had to move them up to be promoted to the stack rank.

I wasn't very happy about that because I don't like it. It should reflect my skills. I should be judged - when I go up against people, when I kick them in the butt, I want to be at the top, I don't want to be at the top, luckily for me that I put a list of 50 on the review board and my manager Successes that I also achieved in this year of the greats, right? I knew exactly what I was doing every single day of the year.

The evidence was so overwhelming that it got me to the top because it would have been an HR nightmare trying to justify someone moving me so deeply above me when there was this documentation that I made sure I walked in my personnel file, which showed all these achievements. I had documented them. I didn't have conclusive evidence that I deserved the raise and I got the raise.

This is especially valuable when you have to fill in your assessment and say what you've done this year, what you've achieved, and you can list so many things. It is great. It's really great so it's worth spending a few minutes every day to keep track of not only that, it's a good CYA too.

I also had an incident where someone who didn't like me tried to fire me. They said, 'Well, John doesn't do a lot of work. I saw him doing it. ' He had a long lunch. ' Guess what, when it got to Human Resources, I said, 'What day? On which day was I not at my desk or not working or not achieving something? Oh okay February 3rd? YeahY, okay, that's exactly what I did on February 3rd. oh yeah, and I sent it to my manager and CCed his manager so I wouldn't just make this up.

I have the email here. ' Guess what happened? Guess what the result was. It was very clear who was trying to make things up and who was being honest because I had inconclusive evidence - conclusive evidence.

In any case, it is extremely valuable for these reasons. It's something that is really easy the question here, here is the format, all you do is this, it's really easy. Every day, you just take out a few bullet points of the most important things you've done.

The format I would put it in is not to send this every single day, send it once a week. Bullet what I've done Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday at most 3 to 5 points. You want someone to read it quickly so they actually read it and just summarize what you know and highlight the accomplishments, make them look good, right? Then summarize a little, maybe a little bit o write a novel.

You really want to make it easy for yourself. That is the format. It's that simple.

You can use your own format if you want. Here's the thing, I'll give you this tip. Don't make it too complicated because if you make it too complicated, you are doing too much work for yourself, you won't be doing it every day.

If you don't do it every day, the value will be omitted. You have to be consistent with this, right? That is the key here. Make it easy, make it something you can do in 5 to 10 minutes.

What I would do all day while working on something I would just open my file open and toss my bullet point in there and I would have that file ready for the end of the week. At the end of the day, 10 minutes before I left, I would go and I would clean it up and make sure I had it for this day so I don't have to sit there on Friday and try to remember what I did on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, right? I was there, did that. You don't want to do that.

Anyway, this is something very valuable. As I said, take a look at my book. If you didn't get my book, seriously, get it, Soft Skills: A Software Developer's Life Manual.

You can get it here. I also have an audible version that I recorded the audio in. I also added some additional content.

Definitely check it out. If you have the book, I would really appreciate it if you leave a review on the book. I really appreciate that.

It helps other people find the book. Anyway, that's my tip. Hopefully that answers the question here.

Got a few questions about the different-questions/how-do-i-find-my-google-reviews-7352, but I think it's one really good technique. I highly recommend it. It's something that can really make a huge difference in your career and it will only make your manager's job easier.

If you make your manager look good, it will be good for you, I promise you. Anyway, if you have a question you can email me at john@simpleprogrammer.com, if you like this channel subscribe to the channel, okay I'll speak to you next time.

Take care of yourself.
