What happens when Venus transits?

A transit of Venus across the Sun takes place when the planet Venus passes directly between the Sun and a superior planet, becoming visible against (and hence obscuring a small portion of) the solar disk. During a transit, Venus can be seen from Earth as a small black dot moving across the face of the Sun.

The opposite of where a larger object passes in front of a smaller one is called covering. The Venus transit is the place where the planet Venus sweeps across the face of the sun when viewed from Earth.

Now this event is really very rare. In fact, it has only happened about 25 times since the Romans arrived in Britain. And only about 7 times since the telescope was invented.

In fact, a transit can only take place where Venus crosses the plane of the earth's orbit. This is done in two positions. One is called the ascending node and the other is called the descending node.

It takes Venus about 225 days to orbit the sun and earth, apparently 365 times. This means that 8 orbits of the earth and 13 orbits of Venus take roughly the same time. So if there is a year of transit, then there could be one 8 years later.

It's not exactly 8 years, so the exact alignment will be very slightly different in each 8-year period. In 2004 the transit moved over the lower half of the sun. In 2012 it will be above the top half.

And in 2020 it will completely miss the sun. Because of the small difference every 8 years they will be realigned the next time they are more than a century long. So why are Venus transits historically significant? Before we observed a Venus transit, we knew the relative size of the solar system, for example, we knew Venus roughly 72% of the way between the sun and earth is, but we didn't know how many miles it was.

So we are actually able to use the parallax effect when we have observers at both ends of the earth, and we can use the tiny change in the apparent position of Venus to find out how far it is and how far we are from Venus away are sun. Mercury transits happen more frequently, about a dozen times per century. And a transit of the moon, also known as a solar eclipse, occurs on average a couple of times a year. It's all a question of perspective.
